Description

The disposal of plastic waste must be addressed because it has taken a toll on the environment. Part of the EU’s initiatives towards a circular economy involves achieving 100 % reusable and recyclable plastic packaging by 2030. This not only requires upgrading plastic processing and recycling capabilities but also calls for innovation in sustainable plastic materials. The EU-funded RΕBICOM project aims to develop and manufacture flexible plastic films for packaging and lamination that are biodegradable and compostable. These new plastic films are made of fossil-based polymers that are fully biocompostable through enzymatic degradation. They provide safe and secure packaging for food and non-food items while being reusable and recyclable.
