Every year, Europeans generate 25 million tonnes of plastic waste, but less than 30 % is collected for recycling. Too often, the way plastics are currently produced, used and discarded fail to capture the economic benefits of a more circular approach. New recycling technologies are required to help the European Union transition towards a more circular economy. The EU-funded REMAT project is developing patented technology to transform non-recyclable mixed plastic waste streams and other non-recycle materials into composite products. At a pilot facility launched in January 2019, the project has started closing the loop by turning mixed plastic waste – unwanted by the recycling industry – into materials that can be used to manufacture new plastic products.
